Reporting Loss or Theft of Valuables

What to do first- Make A Police Report:

All thefts and major losses should be reported to the police as soon as possible. You should go to the headquarters of the Policia de Segurança Publica (PSP) at the Rua da Alfândega in downtown Ponta Delgada to file a police report. If you are outside of the Ponta Delgada area, go to the PSP headquarters that has jurisdiction over the area where the items were lost/stolen. The same procedure is applied in other regions throughout Portugal. If you have lost your passport, identification documents and other papers as well as personal effects, you will receive separate reports.

The report must be made in person. The police will not accept a report by telephone or from someone else on your behalf. Most police stations have English-speaking personnel; if you have difficulty making yourself understood in English, call the Consulate’s Office of American Services (296-282-216) for assistance in interpreting by telephone.

While it is unlikely that the thieves will be arrested as a result, it is important that you report thefts to the police. The police report is helpful and sometimes necessary in applying for the replacement of airline tickets, passports, travelers' checks, etc. It is also useful for supporting insurance claims.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Passport

The Consular Section of the Consulate will replace lost or stolen passports upon verification of your identity and citizenship. The following items are needed in order to expedite your request for a replacement passport:

Police Report: You must first file a report with Portuguese police authorities that documents a lost or stolen passport. Bring a copy of the police report to the Consulate.

Personal Identification: Please bring documents to establish your personal identification such as a driver's license, birth certificate, photocopy of the missing passport, and expired passport.

Proof of citizenship: A birth or naturalization certificate, or photocopy of your missing or stolen passport constitutes proof of citizenship.

Photographs: Please include two identical and recent full-face photographs taken with a white or very light background measuring 2 inches x 2 inches (5cm x 5cm) with your application. There are several photo shops in Ponta Delgada that can produce photos the right size. They normally cost 10-12 Euros.

Cash: The fee for replacing a passport is $85 dollars payable in Euros. No personal checks
