Gavin A. Sundwall

Gavin Sundwall is the Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate to the Azores in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. He arrived in Ponta Delgada in September 2009. As Principal Officer, he is in charge of managing the U.S. relationship with the Regional Government of the Azores, working with the 65th U.S. Air Base Wing at Lajes Field, looking after the interests of U.S. citizens in the Azores, and overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the Consulate.

Prior to taking up his duties in Ponta Delgada, Mr. Sundwall was the Information Officer in the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy in Panama, beginning in 2006. As Information Officer, he served as the embassy’s spokesperson and its prime interlocutor with local and international media, designing public outreach initiatives and assisting with cultural and educational exchanges. His most recent Washington assignment was working in the Department of State’s Office of Australian, New Zealand, and Pacific Island Affairs.

Mr. Sundwall’s other assignments include China, Kuwait, and a first tour in Panama. He joined the U.S. Foreign Service in March 1997.

Mr. Sundwall is an avid tennis player and the author of the May 2007 Tennis Magazine article: “The Global Game: For one U.S. diplomat, the art of statesmanship means speaking softly and carrying a tennis racquet.” He received a BA in Ancient Greek in 1991 and an MA in Ancient History in 1994 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is married to Giselle Barraza, and they have two children.

Gavin Sundwall é o novo cônsul dos Estados Unidos da América nos Açores. Chegou a Ponta Delgada em Setembro de 2009.
Como representante do Governo Americano nos Açores, é responsável pelas relações com o Governo Regional dos Açores, em trabalhar com o Destacamento Americano sediado nas Lajes, a assegurar o apoio aos americanos nos Açores, e supervisionar o dia-a-dia do Consulado em Ponta Delgada.

Antes de vir para Ponta Delgada, desempenhou, desde 2006, funções como Adido de Imprensa da Embaixada Americana no Panamá. Era o porta-voz da Embaixada e o principal interlocutor com a imprensa local e internacional, divulgando as variadas iniciativas daquela embaixada e organizando intercâmbios culturais e educacionais. A sua mais recente posição em Washington foi no Departamento de Apoio à Austrália, Nova Zelândia e Ilhas do Pacifico.

A sua carreira diplomática começou no Panamá (onde esteve duas vezes), esteve também na China e no Kuwait.

O Sr. Sundwall é jogador de ténis e autor de um artigo da Tennis Magazine de Maio de 2007, intitulado “The Global Game: For one U.S. diplomat, the art of statesman means speaking softly and carrying a tennis racquet.” O Sr. Sundwall é formado pela Universidade da Carolina do Norte, em Chapel Hill, em História da Grécia Antiga (1991) e tem um mestrado, pela mesma universidade, em História da Antiguidade (1994). É casado com Giselle Barraza e tem dois filhos.
