Mission Portugal Promotes Children’s Environmental Program in Azores

Feb. 25, 2010 - Making good on Mission Portugal’s goal of mitigating climate change and promoting energy security, Public Affairs Officer Abigail Dressel visited February 25 Consulate Ponta Delgada partner the Centro de Educaçao Ambiental de Santa Casa de Miserícordia de Ribeira Grande in the Azores.

The Center provides a positive learning environment for the children from some of the island of São Miguel’s more rural areas, teaching them to protect and preserve the fragile environment of the Azores and exposing them to the abundant “green” opportunities available to them as Azoreans. The Azores region, often in partnership with mainland Portuguese and U.S. entities, is well on its way to reaching its goal of obtaining 50% of its electricity from renewable sources such as geothermal, wind, hydro, solar, and biomass by 2014 and 75% by 2018.

PAO Dressel painted recycled Easter bunnies for baskets made from recycled materials that the children will use in the upcoming holiday.
