U.S. Air Force “Check Six” Jazz Band Wows Azorean Audience

Oct. 13, 2009 - To commemorate 100 years of aviation in Portugal, on October 7 the premier jazz band of the United States Air Forces in Europe, Check Six, put on an all-star performance for several hundred enthused music fans as part of a concert that also featured the Portuguese Air Force Band at the Ramo Grande theater on the Azorean island of Terceira, home of the U.S. Air Force’s 65th Air Base Wing.

Since its inception in 1945, Check Six has performed throughout Europe, including at the Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and at a host of other well-known jazz venues.

The highlight of the evening came when two drummers from the Portuguese Air Force Band joined Check Six on the jazz number “Bolivia,” showcasing the friendship the United States and Portugal share through this joint performance that drew extended applause.
