Consulate Spreads Spirit of Thanksgiving at Orphanage

Nov. 25, 2009 - To share the spirit of giving Americans celebrate annually at Thanksgiving, the U.S. Consulate in Ponta Delgada helped a shelter for at-risk young people of the Mãe de Deus Orphanage in Ponta Delgada November 25.

With materials provided by Embassy Lisbon’s Humanitarian Outreach Program, Consulate staff spent the day cleaning the shelter’s back yard and painting its walls, giving the children a clean and safe place to play. Inspired by the act, the shelter’s director wrote an unsolicited article published December 1 by one of the Azores’ major newspapers, commenting “this gesture of solidarity touched us deeply.”
