U.S., Portugal Honor Strong Historical Ties in Azores

Nov. 24, 2009 - A memorial ceremony held at the World War II cemetery on the island of Terceira November 24 reaffirmed the strong historical ties shared by the United States, Portugal, and the people of the Azores. Conducted annually, the event honors the allied soldiers and sailors of several nations buried in the cemetery who gave their lives in common cause during the Second World War.

Principal Officer Gavin Sundwall joined the commanders of the Azores Air Zone Command, the U.S. 65th Air Base Wing at Lajes, and the mayors of several cities on Terceira in laying a wreath to commemorate their sacrifice.
